We are pleased to welcome The University of Michigan to the GSUN Leadership Council! The University of Michigan is one of the United States’s top public universities, and has been a leader in research, learning and teaching for more than 200 years. With over $1.9 billion in annual research funding, U-M has one of the highest research volumes of any public university in the U.S.
U-M is advancing new solutions and knowledge in areas ranging from the COVID-19 pandemic to driverless vehicle technology, social justice and carbon neutrality. Its main campus in Ann Arbor comprises 19 schools and colleges; there are also regional campuses in Dearborn and Flint, and a nationally ranked health system, Michigan Medicine. The university has been the site of many important events in U.S. history, including JFK’s announcement of the Peace Corps, LBJ’s “Great Society” speech, and the clinical trials of the Salk polio vaccine. U-M’s alumni body is one of the largest in the world and includes a U.S. president, scientists, actors, astronauts and inventors.
The University of Michigan has multiple programs on the leading edge of sport and physical activity. The Human Performance and Sport Science Center (HPSSC) serves the University through the promotion and amplification of sport science research and education, and its Athlete Innovation Program partners with the University of Michigan’s Athletic Department, supporting over 900 student-athletes across 29 varsity teams. Its Adaptive Sports and Fitness program is a leader in increasing awareness about, knowledge of, access to, and participation in adaptive sports and fitness among people with and without disabilities. Its School of Kinesiology hosts degrees in Applied Exercise Science, Athlete Training, Movement Science, and Sport Management, while Michigan Medicine hosts a world-renowned sports medicine program.
